CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A former University of Virginia law student convicted of breaking into the registrar's office has avoided jail time.

The Daily Progress reports that 26-year-old Joshua Peter Gomes was sentenced on Tuesday to 10 years of good behavior.

Gomes pleaded guilty in August to breaking and entering. Prosecutors say he broke into the school's registrar office to alter his law school transcript.

Gomes told Charlottesville Circuit Court Judge Edward Hogshire that he was sorry for his actions.
