RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Farmville is receiving a $200,000 federal grant to help create a permanent destination to commemorate the role the town played in the civil rights movement.
Gov. Bob McDonnell said the funding is from the Community Development Block Grant program administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
The town is planning a new facility to feature exhibits that document and reflect upon the transition from segregated to integrated public education. It will focus on the local children and families affected by the civil rights movement in the area. Officials say the town is partnering with the Robert Russa Moton Museum for the project.
McDonnell says it will be a fitting anchor for the Civil Rights Education Heritage Trail and will help honor and remember the historic movement.
