Richmond, VA—The former head of a prominent local grocery store chain, has resigned from the University of Richmond's Board of Trustees, due to disappointment with the board's decision to cut the men's soccer and track program, say sources.

Bobby Ukrop, one of the University of Richmond's largest donors, resigned December 7. Ukrop was a high-profile supporter of the school's sports programs.

The University of Richmond released the following statement concerning Ukrop's departure:

"The university is deeply grateful for Bobby Ukrop's remarkable leadership and generosity over the course of many decades. His influence continues to touch every area of the university. Likewise, his corporate and civic leadership, which has strengthened and enriched our community and region, serves as an outstanding example for students and fellow alumni."
