Charles City County, VA—An elderly man lost his life in a house fire Saturday morning; investigators are trying to determine how it started.

Marion "Bootsy" Hughes died in a blaze that consumed his home in the 4000 block of Old Union Road in Charles City County. The fire began at about 10:45 a.m.

A caretaker who helped Hughes on a daily basis left shortly before the fire began.

Hughes' sister told 8News that he had lived in the area his entire life, and he was well known and liked in the community. Hughes was a father of two, and had one granddaughter.

Joe Bell, who owns the building which once housed a store owned by Hughes' family, said losing "Bootsy" was a big loss for Charles City.

"Big, big loss for me too," Bell said. "He was well liked, he was a nice man, and did a lot of charity work."

When fire fighters put out the fire, they found Hughes' remains in his bed.

The home is a total loss, and fire officials are working to determine how the fire started.
