RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Governor's Holiday Hoops Classic made its debut in Richmond, and delivered more than 100 tons of food for food banks across Virginia.
News of the big food haul was announced Saturday, ending a month-long drive to collect food for the needy by the four participating schools. The University of Virginia soared above the other state schools, collecting 152,893 pounds of food. Next came Old Dominion, the University of Richmond and George Mason.
In all, the four schools raised 216,000 pounds of food and funds.
Gov. Bob McDonnell called the food bank collection an "incredible outpouring of generosity" by students, fans, alumni and community members.
A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will also be donated to the Federation of Virginia Food Banks.
