Richmond, VA—A local organization will held a candlelight vigil Sunday evening, in honor of the 26 victims of the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy.

Citizens Against Crime held a "Citywide Candlelight Prayer Vigil" at 6 p.m. at Festival Park, located at 601 East Leigh Street, near the Richmond Coliseum.

Organizers of the event say the purpose was to "show a solidarity of support to the families, students and staff of Newtown, Connecticut, and to allow a moment of comfort to Richmonders who are grieving from the tragedy."

Mayor Dwight C. Jones brought  remarks and condolences on behalf of the city of Richmond. Gov. Bob McDonnell was invited to speak, as well as Chief of Police Bryan T. Norwood and Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Brandon. Richmond's "Ambassador of Compassion," Alicia C. Raisin was also featured on the program.

Participants were asked to bring candles to the vigil.
