RESTON, Va. (AP) - The director of the Reston Zoo has pleaded guilty to animal cruelty in connection with the drowning of an injured wallaby.
Meghan Mogensen of Silver Spring, Md., was found guilty of animal cruelty and possession of an animal euthanasia drug without a license during a September trial in Fairfax County General District Court in, but she appealed her convictions to the county's circuit court.
Under a deal with prosecutors the 27-year-old pleaded guilty to animal cruelty, and the euthanasia drug possession charge was dropped. She is also is barred from making decisions about the care or euthanasia of any animal if she serves as an animal caretaker. She will serve 30 days in jail.
Mogensen's father, Eric Mogensen, owns the zoo.
