NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A Virginia charter fishing company owner has admitted to charges that he arranged for clients to illegally catch striped bass.
Jeffery S. Adams of Hudgins pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court in Norfolk to a violation of the Lacey Act.
Court records show Adams' company knowingly took clients into an area called the exclusive economic zone in January 2010. Since 1990, the U.S. has imposed a moratorium on fishing for striped bass within that zone.
Prosecutors say Adams' clients caught 10 striped bass before returning to Rudee Inlet in Virginia Beach.
The 41-year-old Adams faces up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and the forfeiture of the vessel used on the trip. His company, Adams Fishing Adventures, faces fines up to $500,000. Sentencing is set for April 18.
