PERERSBURG, VA— The man Petersburg Police say shot at
officers during a police chase and then fled the scene has been taken into
police custody. He and three others now face attempted capital murder charges.
Andre Cordell Mason, 25, of Hopewell, was
taken into custody Thursday when he appeared at the Prince George courthouse on charges unrelated
to Wednesday night's chase and shooting.
The four men have been charged with attempted capital murder. The suspects
are identified as:
Chaz Jherron Brown, 22, of Hopewell
Darius Deandre Harris, 18, of Hopewell
Andre Cordell Mason, 25, of Hopewell
Bennie Young, 41, of Petersburg
At approximately 11:47 p.m. Wednesday, officers stationed on South Crater Road heard
shots fired. As they canvassed the area, officers received a call for a
suspicious vehicle, a dark colored SUV in the Blackwater Driver area.
Minutes later, another call was received for shots fired in the area.
Officers said they then noticed a vehicle matching the description of the one
in the first call and pulled behind the SUV.
Police say the SUV slowed in the 100 block of South Crater Road and the occupants began
firing at police.
When officers returned fire, the SUV fled onto Interstate 95 South. The SUV
then exited onto Wagner Road West.
At the intersection of Wagner
Road and Medical
Park Boulevard, the SUV crossed the median and
deliberately struck a police car, police said.
After the SUV stuck the police car and crashed, police say Mason, who was
driving the vehicle, fled on foot.
A MAC-10, a semi-automatic assault style weapon was recovered from the SUV.
Cordell was taken into custody Thursday after appearing in Prince George on charges unrelated to Wednesday
night's chase and shooting.
He was found guilty on drug charges in a Prince George County Circuit Court
on Thursday. Cordell was sentenced to 10 years with all but six months suspended.
He was sent to Riverside Regional Jail
where officers notified Petersburg Police he was in custody.
