HENRICO, VA- Henrico County Public Schools may raise the minimum grade point average for student-athletes to be eligible to compete.
School officials are moving forward with a plan to require athletes to maintain a 2.0 minimum GPA. Currently, Henrico student-athletes adhere to the Virginia High School League's requirements of taking and passing five subjects.
Henrico's assistant superintendent Eric Jones said the proposed change is being met with positive student reaction.
"They all understand that they are role models and they have high expectations for themselves, so the feedback from the student athletes as been pretty positive," said Jones.
If approved, school officials plan to gradually implement the change, starting next year by implementing a 1.6 GPA minimum. That minimum GPA will gradually rise until it becomes a 2.0 in 2016.
