GLOUCESTER, VA—Three children and their grandmother were killed in an early morning house fire in Gloucester County on Wednesday.
Authorities say the grandmother and two other adults were able to escape the home, but the grandmother then re-entered the home to try to save the children.
The children killed were 6-moths-old, 2-years-old and 7-years-old, according to the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office. The grandmother's age was not immediately available. The names of the victims have not been released.
The three children were on the second floor of the home when the fire broke out, fire officials said. When fire crews arrived on scene, the home was fully engulfed in flames, according to authorities.
The Gloucester County Sheriff's Office said the two other adults who escaped the fire suffered non-life treating injures and were taken to a nearby hospital.
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation, but officials said a preliminary investigation suggests the fire was accidental.
