STATEWIDE ROAD CONDITIONS FROM VDOT - 6:30 AM
Heavy snow in southwest Virginia left severe conditions on I-77 and slick roads across the state following the snow storm.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) urges motorists to limit travel this morning as road conditions are slick across the state. The hardest hit area is southwestern Virginia where I-77 in Bland County is in severe condition. Accidents caused part of the interstate to close, but progress is being made to clear the interstate this morning. Crews are working to clear a tractor trailer incident which has caused a southbound section of I-77 to close, causing lengthy traffic back-ups.
The storm hit mainly the southern section of the state from I-64 south. Roads in the southern section are in minor to moderate condition. Motorists should watch for icy patches, with snow and ice on some road surfaces. Roads north of I-64 were not impacted as severely. Those roads are in clear to minor condition. Even with clear conditions, surfaces are slick, particularly on bridges and overpasses.
VDOT crews have been working through the night plowing and treating roads as snow swept through much the state. Crews will remain out in force until the storm is over and all roads are clear.
For the latest information on road conditions, a full list is posted HERE.
Snow removal priorities
Crews first clear interstates, primary roads and major secondary roads that connect localities, fire stations, employment hubs, military posts, schools, hospitals and other important public facilities. Secondary roads and subdivision streets are then cleared, but crews focus efforts on those roads that carry the most traffic.
Drivers are encouraged to call VDOT's 511 or visit www.511virginia.org, before traveling. The website is updated in real time with weather and road conditions for all highways in Virginia. VDOT's 511 mobile app provides real-time traffic and weather information for both iPhone and Android platforms.
You can report road hazards such as downed trees by calling 800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623).
