CULPEPER, Va. (AP) - Attorneys for a former Culpeper police officer convicted of manslaughter are seeking a mistrial.
They say jurors who convicted Daniel Harmon-Wright in the fatal shooting of an unarmed woman consulted a dictionary to guide their deliberations on the meaning of "malice," indicating they were confused about jury instructions, according to media reports.
The trial judge adjourned Wednesday's scheduled sentencing until Friday to hear from opposing attorneys on the matter.
Jurors on Tuesday convicted Harmon-Wright of voluntary manslaughter in the Feb. 9, 2012, death of Patricia Ann Cook. He claimed he shot Cook after she attempted to drive away in her vehicle with his arm caught in the window.

CULPEPER, Va. (AP) - A jury in Culpeper has found a former police officer guilty on three counts including manslaughter in the shooting death of an unarmed woman.
WVIR-TV in Charlottesville (http://bit.ly/127Esny) reports that jurors Tuesday returned the verdict against Daniel Harmon-Wright in the Feb. 9, 2012, death of 54-year-old Patricia Ann Cook.
The 33-year-old Harmon-Wright has testified that he shot Cook after she trapped his arm in the window of her vehicle and dragged him.
A prosecutor called the fatal shooting "excessive" and unnecessary.
Jurors return Wednesday for the sentencing phase of the trial.
