POWHATAN, VA—A dog owner in Powhatan County is grieving the loss of his two huskies, and now the man police say is responsible for the dog's deaths has been arrested.

Louis Nigro, Jr. was arrested and charged with two felony counts of cruelty to animals in connection with the death of two Siberian Huskies.

"It's been heartbreaking that they're gone, and we know that they're not lost, or stolen or missing; they're dead, and they're not coming back," the dogs' owner said.

The dogs' owner, Patrick Obradovic told 8News he reported the dogs, Abby and Jethro, missing January 24. He says the dogs got loose when they dug under this fenced in backyard.

Obradovic said he spent days handing missing posters all around Powhatan County. Eventually a sheriff's deputy came to the home and said the dogs had been found, shot to death, Obradovic said.

It's certainly, it's very heartbreaking to know they died a violent death," Obradovic said.

Nigro has been released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.

He's due in court for a preliminary hearing February 15 at 11:00 a.m.
