Police responded to Ratcliffe Elementary School in Henrico at about 8:40 a.m. on February 4, after school officials found a loaded handgun in a 7-year-old male student's backpack.
After investigation, the school's Resource Officers revealed that the boy brandished the weapon at several students and made threatening statements on a school bus that same morning.
Although details about where the gun was found or how the boy got the gun are not being released, police confirm that he took it from his home, and that the gun belonged to a family member.
78-year-old Harvey L. Pleasant, who is related to the boy, was arrested and charged with allowing access to a firearm by children today; the charge is classified as a class 3 misdemeanor. Mr. Pleasant was issued a summons and released.
