CHESTERFIELD, VA--A family of four was able to safely escape a fire that destroyed their Chesterfield County home early Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out at about 2 a.m. at a home in the 6000 block of Walking Path Lane off Bailey Bridge Road.
Two adults and two children, a 5-week-old baby and an 11-year-old child, were able to escape the fire safely.
The home owner said he awoke to a popping sound and when he looked out the window, he saw a glow from the fire.
He then woke his family and was able to get out of the home as smoke alarms went off.
When fire crews arrived on scene, the home was fully involved in. Firefighters were able to save a cat that was in the home's garage.
Nearby homes were also evacuated as crews worked to extinguish the fire.
The four who escaped the fire, as well as a fifth person who wasn't home at the time of the blaze, have all been displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is assisting the family.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
