DINWIDDIE, VA—A driver attempting to flee a Dinwiddie County Sheriff's deputy lost control of his vehicle, struck a utility pole and died early Wednesday morning, police said.

It happened on Route 1 southbound at Sycamore Drive in Dinwiddie County.

A Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Deputy was attempting to stop the vehicle for a speeding, when the driver attempted to elude the officer, State Police said.

The driver reached speeds exceeding 100 mph before losing control of the vehicle and striking a utility pole, State Police said.

The driver died at the scene; a passenger suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and was flown by med-flight to VCU Medical Center, State Police said.

The victim's name has not been released.
