VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Virginia Beach has agreed to settle a lawsuit stemming from a 10-month-old boy's death while in foster care.
Media outlets report that the City Council was briefed on the settlement Tuesday.
If a circuit court judge approves the agreement, the city will pay $75,000 to the biological father of Braxton Taylor and $50,000 to the child's biological mother. The city also would give $170,000 to a fund for the boy's siblings.
The child died in 2010 after his foster mother, Kathleen Ganiere, shook him. She is serving a 10-year sentence after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter.
The lawsuit alleged that the city Department of Human Services ignored evidence that Ganiere was abusing the child. It also alleged that the department failed to investigate, train and supervise the foster parents.
