ABINGDON, Va. (AP) - An investigation into the cashing of counterfeit checks at retailers in southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee has resulted in charges against dozens of suspects.
U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Heaphy in Abingdon said Thursday that 68 people have been charged with one count of conspiracy.
Media outlets report more than 500 checks totaling more than $90,000 were cashed, most of them at a Wal-Mart store in Bristol starting in November. Others were cashed at stores in Johnson City, Kingsport, Elizabethton, Sevierville and Mountain City, Tenn.
Heaphy says the defendants presented checks claiming to be issued by trucking companies.
