SUFFOLK, VA—A fifth-grade boy in Suffolk faces expulsion after bringing marijuana to school, in what he claims was an effort to prevent his father from smoking the drug.

According to 8News affiliate WVEC, school officials said the boy told officers he found the marijuana in his father's truck.

The boy reportedly told officers he brought the drug to school so he could show his teacher and that he wanted his father to stop using the drug.

Suffolk Public School spokeswoman Bethanne Bradshaw told WVEC, based on the school's drug policy, the student was recommended for expulsion.

A hearing will be held within 10 days.
