Chesterfield, VA—Charges against a Matoaca Middle School band teacher accused of assaulting a student were dropped Tuesday, and school officials say he will return to the classroom.

Michael Harrah was charged with assault after a January incident, in which he was accused of inadvertently touching a student's face while trying to get him to pay attention in class.

In court on Wednesday, Judge Stuart Williams said he could not find any criminal assault in the case.

Chesterfield County Public Schools spokesperson Shawn Smith said the following after the charges were dropped:

"The school division will work directly with Mr. Harrah to complete the administrative process and transition him back to the classroom."

Last week, a student-sparked petition to return Harrah to the classroom garnered over 450 signatures.
