HENRICO, VA—The grandfather of a 7-year-old boy who brought a loaded gun to Ratcliffe Elementary School in early February has avoided jail time but will be forced to pay a $100 fine.

Harvey L. Pleasant, 78, pleaded guilty Thursday to allowing access to a firearm by children, a misdemeanor. Pleasant will not be sentenced to jail time, but will face a $100 fine.

Police responded to Ratcliffe Elementary School in Henrico at about 8:40 a.m. on February 4, after school officials found a loaded handgun in a 7-year-old male student's backpack.

After an investigation, the school's Resource Officers revealed the boy brandished the weapon at several students and made threatening statements on a school bus that same morning.

No one was injured in the incident.
