HENRICO, VA—Just in time for prom season, the Henrico County Police Department is launching a new initiative to crack down on underage drinking.

The Henrico County Police Department says the new initiative isn't in reaction to a specific instance, instead just their efforts to be proactive.

"We want our community to know we care about the lives of our youth," said Chief Doug Middleton with the Henrico County Police Department.

The department sent out pamphlets Friday encouraging parents and teens to discuss the risks and dangers of underage drinking.

In early February, four students at Deep Run High School were charged after police suspected the teens of showing up drunk at a school dance.

Emergency crews had to provide medical assistance to one of the teens, police said.

"If they're parents, we want them to tell their children to call them if they have consumed any alcohol; we want them to discuss the consequences of consuming alcohol with their children," said Chief Middleton.

Henrico County Police said there will be an increase in the number of officers at upcoming school functions, but officers won't administer breathalyzers.
