HENRICO, VA—You could be paying a bit more the next time you eat out in Henrico County, as county leaders look to implement a meals tax in an effort to help bridge a multi-million dollar budget gap.
County leaders say the four percent meal tax could help close the county's $33 million budget shortfall for 2015. The meals tax could rake in about $18 million.
Specifically, the tax would help bridge the budget shortfall in education. Education takes up most of the county's budget at 55%.
"The proceeds from the meals tax would be entirely dedicated to the Henrico County Public Schools," Henrico County Manager John Vithoulkas said.
The Henrico County Board of Supervisors endorsed the proposal Thursday, meaning the four percent meals tax will appear as a referendum on voter's November ballot.
