NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The Navy says water testing at nine child-care centers in the Hampton Roads area found lead levels at two centers exceeding federally recommended levels.

They involved water fountains that were accessible to children. Both have been disconnected and the Navy says corrective measures have been taken. They were among nearly 300 water outlets that have been tested.

The lead levels at the two water fountains were above the 20 parts per billion level recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency for corrective action.

The testing also found levels above EPA standards at other military installations that were not accessible to children. Some faucets were permanently removed.

The Navy said the testing is continuing at all Navy facilities in Hampton Roads.
