Overnight: One Victim Dies From Friday Night Chesterfield Car Crash

UPDATE FROM STATE POLICE:

Virginia State Police is continuing its investigation into Friday night's crash on Midlothian Turnpike near Moorefield Park Drive in Chesterfield County.

The driver of a 2003 Infiniti, who was transported from the scene with serious injuries to VCU Medical Center, has died from his injuries.

The crash occurred after Porter sideswiped two vehicle's before he failed to stop at a red light and struck the Infiniti. After the impact, Porter fled on foot from the scene and was apprehended a short time later by the Chesterfield County Police Department.

Virginia State Police is consulting with the Chesterfield County Commonwealth's Attorney Office on additional charges.

MIDLOTHIAN, Va - A City of Richmond resident is in custody and facing 15 charges following a crash on Midlothian Turnpike at Moorefield Park Drive in Chesterfield County.

At approximately 6:40 p.m., Mar. 29, troopers motioned to the driver of a 2002 GMC SUV to stop and pull over for an equipment violation on southbound Route 76, Powhite Parkway at the toll booth prior to the Route 60 Exit to Midlothian Turnpike.

As troopers attempted to motion the driver to pull over, the driver drove away at a high rate of speed. The troopers lost sight of the suspect vehicle but located the vehicle a short time later after it sideswiped two vehicles and struck a third vehicle near the intersection of Route 60 and Moorefield Park Drive.

After striking the third vehicle, the suspect fled from the scene on foot and attempted to carjack a female driver of another vehicle in a nearby business. The female victim, who was inside her vehicle, was not injured and was able to drive away.

A short time later, the suspect driver, Karon M. Porter, was taken into custody without further incident by the Chesterfield County Police Department.

Porter suffered minor injuries from the crash and was transported to Johnston Willis Hospital.

The driver of the third vehicle and a passenger, suffered serious injuries and passed away Saturday night.

The occupants in the other two vehicles were not injured.

Karon M. Porter, 23, of Richmond was charged with felony and misdemeanor eluding police, obstruction of justice, attempted carjacking; two counts of maiming of another while driving under the influence, felony hit and run; two counts of misdemeanor hit and run; driving under the influence, refusal to submit to a blood or breath test, driving while suspended, disregarding a traffic light, defective equipment, and failure to wear his safety belt.

Porter was held without bond pending his arraignment Monday morning, April 1, in the Chesterfield County General District Court.

The investigation remains on-going.
