Colonial Heights, VA—A Fort Lee marine got a special Easter surprise, when a local church helped reunite him with his fiancée before his deployment!
Marine Reely Daugherty is from California. He will be deployed in about a month; he'll spend some time at sea before being stationed in Japan.
As part of its "DoForOne Week," Destination Church in Colonial Heights flew in Daugherty's bride-to-be, Haley Wilson, from California.
Daugherty could not believe that the church had brought him face-to-face with Wilson.
"I didn't think it was really her, I thought it was someone else with makeup," said Daugherty excitedly. "I was like 'no there's no way, she's in California, she's still asleep, she hasn't even woken up yet."
The pair has known each other for a long while…they met in elementary school. Although Daugherty says he didn't like his fiancée back then, when he saw her Sunday, he assured her and all present with a smile, "Yeah I like her a little bit."
Church members Aaron and Melinda helped facilitate the reunion.
"We just did some behind the scenes work, got in touch with his mother in California on Facebook, started planning things, got in touch with Haley and set it all up," they said.
Other church members said the reunion was a happy, exciting event that they were happy to witness.
"Knowing it was coming this third service today, I was just on edge all day waiting for this moment, it was great. It was so exciting, it was like it was happening to me, it was cool," one member said.
Daugherty will be stationed in Japan for two years. He and Wilson plan to get married before he leaves.
