Shellfish Ban In Virginia Beach River Starts April 12

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - State public health officials are putting off-limits to shell-fishing 607 acres of the Lynnhaven River in Virginia Beach on April 12.

The closing based on fecal coliform concentrations affects oysters and clams, but not crabs or fin fish. The Virginia Department of Health says the closure is based on a general degradation of the area rather than an imminent health hazard.

Announcing the closure two weeks in advance allows the Marine Resources Commission to post the new area and notify harvesters. An imminent health hazard would result in an immediate closure.
