5 Killed In Wrong-Way Crash On I-85 South

BRUNSWICK, VA— Five people were killed in an early morning head-on collision that closed a stretch of Interstate 85 in Brunswick County on Tuesday.

A pick-up truck headed north in the southbound lanes struck a car head-on, according to Virginia State Police.

Police said the driver and three passengers of a Toyota Corolla were killed upon impact. The driver of the pickup truck also died upon impact, according to police.

The wreck happened just before 6:00 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 85 in Brunswick County, according to Virginia State Police. Officers were responding to a 911 call reporting a wrong-way driver, but the wreck occurred before officers could arrive.

It's currently unknown if alcohol or any other factors contributed to the cause of the wreck, according to police.

The victim's names have not been released.

Early Tuesday morning, all lanes of I-85 south were closed just past the Route 46 exit, near mile marker 26.
