Norfolk Deputy Disciplined For Leaving Gun In Fitting Room

Posted: Updated:

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A Norfolk sheriff's deputy has been disciplined for leaving his loaded handgun in a Macy's dressing room.

The Norfolk Sheriff's Office tells media outlets that the deputy immediately notified the store in Norfolk after he got home Monday afternoon and realized that he had left the weapon.

The sheriff's office did not say what type of discipline was imposed.

Professional Standards Division spokeswoman Paula Miller tells media outlets that the deputy won't be identified because it's an internal matter and no criminal charges will be filed.

Miller says the sheriff's office considers the situation as serious and unacceptable.

She says it's not uncommon for officers to carry their weapons while off duty.
