RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Science Museum of Virginia officials want to reinvent the institution with next-generation exhibits and expanded facilities.
To accomplish that goal, the Richmond-based museum has launched a $60 million fundraising campaign. The museum plans to raise $30 million from private donors and $30 million from the state.
Museum director Rich Conti tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/Yp9x0D ) that the museum has received $23 million in state appropriations and $7 million in private donations so far. He says it will take five years to meet the campaign's goal.
The museum plans to spend $22 million on new and updated exhibits. Five new exhibits are planned.
Another $25 million will be used for improvements, including construction of a 14,000-square-foot events center.
The museum also plans to expand community outreach and build its endowment.
