Budget Cuts Affect Shenandoah National Park

Posted: Updated:

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) - Shenandoah National Park has delayed campground openings and taken other steps to make up for automatic spending cuts.

Shenandoah spokeswoman Karen Beck-Herzog says the park's operating budget was reduced by $622,000 this fiscal year.

Beck-Herzog says that the park has reduced some programs and services because of the cuts.

Campgrounds and visitor centers are opening later than usual. Beck-Herzog says the park also has cut its spring ranger program, in which rangers take visitors on walks through the park. The summer and fall ranger programs aren't affected.

Permanent full-time employees won't face furloughs. But the park has shortened the work seasons of 26 seasonal employees who work less than six months.
