Vigil Set For VSU Student Who Died In Hazing Incident

Posted: Updated:

PORTSMOUTH—A vigil for a Virginia State University freshman who died during a hazing incident at the Appomattox River will be held at his home town of Portsmouth on Wednesday.

The body of 19-year-old Marvell Edmondson was recovered from the river Monday, after police say he and other VSU students attempted to cross the Appomattox River early Saturday morning, but didn't make it out.

Students were reportedly attempting to cross the river as part of a pledging initiation for "Men of Honor," an off-campus organization not affiliated with the university.

Freshmen Jauwan Holmes, of Williamsburg, was also reported missing; crews continue to search him.

The vigil will be held on the football field at Churchland High School, located at 4301 Cedar Lane. It begins at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Four men have been charged with hazing, following the Saturday indecent. Police arrested three of the men Tuesday, and officers continue to look for the fourth.
