Henrico, VA—A hole in Henrico is growing and could soon swallow a woman's home. The homeowner had to be rescued last Friday, when she fell into the gaping sinkhole head first.
It has been nearly a week since Tammy Young was pulled from the sinkhole in her yard; crews worked for 30 minutes to retrieve her. Since that time, Young says she doesn't feel any better about the problem.
"You're really getting disgusted... Because you can't get no answers."
She wants to get to the bottom of what is causing the holes, because they are not getting any smaller. When she fell into the larger hole, she was trying to determine what caused a smaller hole a few inches away.
"It's starting to make another hole that way. And it's starting to go down where I was in the hole," Young says.
She says the larger hole has grown about an inch wider. Despite the risk, Young says she is thinking about getting out her shovel again.
"I'm afraid if I go down too far, I'm gonna fall, then I'll be covered."
She thought the holes may have been remnants of an old mine shaft, or perhaps a Civil War battlefield. But Henrico County officials confirmed on Monday that neither of these reasons was behind the holes.
Young is determined to find the cause and find a way to stop the holes from widening.
"It's a mystery. And I'm going to figure out what it is."
