Posted: Updated:

Powhatan County, VA—Three people were killed after the vehicle they were riding in ran off Route 60 and struck at tree Saturday evening; all three victims have been identified, and police say alcohol is a factor in the crash.

Police were called to the scene of the crash on April 4 at about 8:30 p.m. A 2002 Lexus had run off the side of Route 60, west of Batterson Road in Powhatan County and struck a tree.

The driver, as 53-year-old Jerry B. Middleton of Chesterfield, was flown by med-flight to VCU Medical Center in Richmond with life-threatening injuries.

The front seat passenger has been identified as Joan V. Middleton, 62, of Richmond. She was wearing her safety belt, and was killed at the scene.

The left rear seat passenger has been identified as Shirley M. Smothers, 73, of Richmond. Smothers was not wearing a safety belt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The third victim has been identified as 70-year-old Thelma Middleton of Richmond.

Charges are pending against Middleton, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar, who confirms that alcohol is considered as a factor in the crash.
