CHESTERFIELD, VA—A bottle bomb was found on the front porch of an elderly Chesterfield County couple's home, and now police are trying to figure out how it got there.
It happened late Saturday night at a home in the Hylton Park neighborhood.
Homeowner Tony Hutskow says he and his wife were awoken by the sound of their doorbell. When he opened the door, he says he saw a water bottle sitting on his front porch.
"There was something in it, but I didn't know what it was," Hutskow said.
He says he thought it was trash and, since it was raining, he didn't retrieve the bottle, but instead when back to bed.
The next morning, Hutskow went to look at the bottle. That's when he says he realized it was full of firecrackers and fuses.
Hutskow called police, who confirmed the bomb had been lit, but the fuse had been extinguished by the rain.
Neighbors say they're shocked by the incident.
"It's amazing that people would actually do that especially to really nice people," said Heather Mauk, one of Hutskow's neighbors.
To the people reasonable, Hutskow says he has just one message.
"Nobody's hurting anybody around here—why do people have to do this?," said Hutskow. "I mean there's better things to do in life than go around causing problems for people."
Police are asking anyone in the neighborhood who may have seen anything that night to call them.
