Richmond, VA—In a troubling new trend, teens are using a plant that could be growing in your backyard to get high. 8News has discovered that in the metro Richmond area, Jimson Weed smoking is a growing problem.
Jimson Weed is a small white flower that grows up and down the East Coast. It contains dozens of greenish-brown seeds that are chewed or made into a tea to get high.
Dr. Ruddy Rose of the Virginia Poison Center says he has seen plenty of cases of Jimson Weed poisoning, as recently as last year, and he expect to see these types of cases again.
"In fact in Virginia it's often referred to as Jamestown weed. yes I would expect that we would see them over the summer."
Although Jimson Weed is not a new drug, officials are seeing a resurgence of its usage across the country. Wayne Frith of Chesterfield Substance Abuse Free Environment says the little flower is incredibly dangerous, and the effect can last for days.
"Why would you risk, maybe, losing your mind? Because some people never recover."
Dr. Rose agrees, saying, "In higher concentrations can cause some significant psychiatric side effects including hallucinations."
Jimson Weed is considered a poison, and can have a very different effect depending on the user. If Jimson Weed is ingested, users should call 911 immediately.
