NEW KENT, VA—A lightning strike is being blames for a fire at a West Point church that caused thousands of dollars worth of damage.
The steeple of the First Baptist Church in King William County was struck by lightning during Thursday's storm, causing the church to catch fire.
In addition to fire damage to the tower, there was water damage on the first and second floors. Witnesses say the bell tower was struck around 6 p.m.
The church sustained an estimated $75,000 worth of damage.
