Louisa County, VA—The 6-year-old Richmond girl who drowned during a Memorial Day fishing trip at Lake Anna has been identified.
Police say Asa Gayle, 6, was playing on rocks near the water and fishing with relatives on Dike 3, when she slipped into the water.
"I was up on that wall up there fishing, and all I heard was hollering," said Larry Jackson who was at the lake when the indecent happened.
Witnesses say the child's grandfather, along with a second man, attempted to rescue the girl, but she disappeared under the water.
Search and rescue crews from approximately five different departments were at the lake, searching for the young girl.
It took crews around three hours to locate the child's body.
"The current is basically the deadly part of this whole story," said Maj. Donny Lowe with the Louisa County Sheriff's Department. "It'll grab you, and it'll just suck you down to the bottom."
There were initial reports of a second person in distress; this person, an adult, made it back to shore safely.
Officials tell 8News they have not yet reached the girl's mother, who is currently out of the country.
Asa was a student at J.E.B. Stuart Elementary School.
