HENRICO, VA—A 2-month-old girl has died after suffering serious injuries when her mother allegedly left the girl and her 20-month-old brother inside a hot car. The girl's death comes just days after her brother was found dead inside a Prince George County apartment.

Brittney R. Downing, 22, of Prince George County, was charged Tuesday in Henrico County with two counts of felonious child neglect.

Police responded to the Bailey Ridge Apartment complex in Prince George on the evening of Sunday, May 26. When officers arrived, they found an 18-month-old male child deceased.

A second child, a two-month-old female infant, was taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment of unspecified injuries and/or illness. The child remained in critical condition until Thursday, when she died.

Henrico County Police say the investigation centers around an incident that took place at a hotel in the 10600 block of Telegraph Road, near Brook Road.

Sources tell 8News that Downing left her two young children in a car while she went to work.

The boy's body has been sent to the Medical Examiner's Office, where the exact cause of death will be determined.

The investigation is ongoing. Stay with 8News for updates.
