Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, VA—Police are investigating after a person was struck and killed by a train in Richmond late Thursday night.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. Thursday evening on Broad Rock Boulevard near the VA hospital.

Witnesses say it's common for people to try to beat the train as it approaches the crossing. One woman told 8News she heard screams as the train came to a stop.

"It sounded like someone being murdered, but I didn't think so at first until I came out here on Broad Rock and found out someone did get killed," said Sarah Noonkaster who witnessed the accident.

Crews spent several hours clearing the scene which police say was about the length of a football field.

The victim's name has not been released.

Investigators are still trying to figure out why the victim was on the tracks.
