SALEM, Va. (AP) - Cigarette taxes are going up in Salem and Vinton.
Beginning July 1, Salem's cigarette tax will increase from 20 cents a pack to 45 cents. Vinton's tax will rise from 20 cents a pack to 35 cents.
Local officials tell media outlets that the increases are needed to raise additional revenue.
Salem Mayor Mayor Randy Foley says the city will use the extra revenue to increase its reserves.
Vinton Mayor Brad Grose says his town will use the additional revenue for improvement projects.
