ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - Alexandria police say an 8-month-old boy has died after he was apparently left in his mother's car while she was at work.

Police were called to Inova Alexandria Hospital on Friday afternoon after the unresponsive child was brought there. Police spokesman Lt. Mark Bergin says the child's mother told hospital staff that the boy was in the car when she left her home in Alexandria for work in Arlington County.

The mother intended to drop the boy off at day care. It wasn't clear why the boy was still in the car as the woman was driving home from work.

The high temperature Friday in Arlington was 90 degrees.

Arlington police are investigating.
