Virginia Unemployment Rate Increases In June

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Employment Commission says the state's jobless rate increased for the second month in a row in June.

The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.5 percent in June. That's up from 5.3 percent in May, and down from 6 percent a year ago.

Virginia's unemployment rate has been trending down since joblessness peaked at 7.4 percent from December 2009 until March 2010.

The Labor Department says the national unemployment rate was unchanged at 7.6 percent in June even though employers added 195,000 jobs.

Rates rose in 28 states last month, partly because more Americans started looking for work and not all of them found jobs. Unemployment rates fell in 11 states and were unchanged in another 11.
