CHESTERFIELD, VA— Chesterfield County Police are searching for the person who stole a fire truck and took it for a joy ride before crashing it early Saturday morning.
A Chesterfield Police officer discovered the crashed fire engine early Saturday morning near Woodpecker and Bundle Roads.
Officials say the engine was taken from a secured parking lot at a maintenance facility.
Police say not just anyone could have taken the truck.
"The individual must've had some sort of knowledge as far as how to start the vehicle," said Lt. Dave Schand with the Chesterfield County Police Department.
The truck involved is a specialty engine, and it's the only one available in the county.
Crews are now working to determine if the engine can repaired, or if it has to be replaced. Buying a new engine could cost up to $550,000 dollars.
Officials believe insurance will cover the truck's damage.
Officials are looking for information on the suspect and are asking the public for help. If you have any information please call Chesterfield Crime Solvers at (804)748-0660.
