City Could Fine Woman Whose Home Was Hit By Stolen Car

RICHMOND, VA—Just days after a driver ran a stop sign and plowed into a Richmond woman's home, she receives a citation in the mail from the City of Richmond.

It all started Wednesday when police say a teenager stole a SUV, engaged officers on a pursuit and then struck a GRTC van before crashing into Nancy Walton's home.

The crash left some structural damage to the home, and due to the structural issues, the City of Richmond has given Nancy Walton a deadline to correct the problems or face stiff fines.

"I could face serious fines for something that was no fault of mine," Nancy Walton told 8News.

The impact from the crash was so strong, Walton's home now has four code violations, including stress cracks inside her living room.

"I feel like I am a victim in this situation, where I didn't ask for the vehicles to hit my house, and now I am being fined by the city if I don't get the work done in less than a month and a half," Walton said.

The City of Richmond sent a letter to Walton saying the issue must be fixed by August 29, and if she fails to meet the deadline, she could face criminal action and fines up to $2,500 per violation, per day.

8News took Walton's concerns to the city which says it will work with Walton, even if it means extending the deadline.

"In situations where there are life safety issues or concerns of structural failure, we may need to have things done in a prompt manner," said Douglas Murrow with the City of Richmond. "In this situation, it was very minor, so we are willing to work with them to give them more time if that's needed."

Walton tells 8News she already had a contractor and her insurance company has been notified.

"It could have been a lot worse; it could have been a lot better, because it shouldn't have happened," said Walton.

The 15-year-old driver of the vehicle has been charged with auto theft, attempting to elude police, driving without a license and hit and run with personal injury.

The juvenile's name has not been released.
