Portsmouth Officer Charged with Animal Cruelty

Posted: Updated:

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - A Portsmouth police officer and his wife face animal cruelty charges stemming from the death of a former police horse.

Police tell WAVY-TV (http://bit.ly/164FjnM) that 34-year-old Officer Brian Davis and 33-year-old Jennifer Davis of Suffolk adopted the horse, named Amy, in 2009 after she was retired from the department's mounted patrol.

Debra and David Kelly took over caring for the horse in March. They had told WAVY that the horse appeared to be emaciated.

A veterinarian determined that the horse had been starved. The horse died two weeks after the Kellys began caring for her.

Police say Davis is now in an administrative assignment. He had been assigned to the department's K-9 unit.
