HENRICO - Local gun shops say we're under a severe ammunition shortage.
Curtis Hicks with Colonial Shooting Academy says it started back in January.
Reasons include more people shooting and an increase in ranges opening.
Plus, more states allow concealed carry permit and there was a scare so-to-speak.
"There were reports that ammo wouldn't be available and some people held onto more than they normally would," Hicks says.
While demand has outreached manufacturer capabilities, it is expected to return to a normal level, which would put availability back to normal too.
"The manufacturers are producing as much ammo as they physically can," Hicks says. "Many are increasing ammunition by adding machinery. Supplies are coming through at a better pace than say the first of the year."
Hicks says each month, the supply gets better, but he estimates it will take about two years for it to be completely back to normal.
