CHESTERFIELD, VA—A teacher at Matoaca High School is on unpaid leave after being charged with seven felonies for allegedly having an "inappropriate relationship" with a young student.
Nicholas M. Ells, 29, of Chesterfield, has been charged with three counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor while in a custodial role and four counts of carnal knowledge of a child between 13 and 15 years of age.
Police say Ells, a teacher at Matoaco High School, was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a juvenile female student.
When the school became aware of the incident, police say the school contacted Child Protective Services who notified police.
"There are seven felony charges and pursuant to state law and CCPS policy, he has been suspended without pay," Chesterfield County Schools spokesman Shawn Smith said.
He was arrested and charged Thursday. A pretrial hearing was held Friday, but a bond hearing has not been set.
Ells remains in jail. A preliminary hearing is set for October 2 at 10 a.m.
