RICHMOND - Governor McDonnell
says he will serve out his term despite increased pressure and continuing
coverage of the controversial relationship between Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams
and Virginia's first family.
Right now, the Governor is
trying to avoid federal charges.
Though nationally, some are
saying he should step aside.
"Bob McDonnell will do everything he can to
avoid that option," says political analyst Richard Meagher. "He doesn't want to
be the Virginia Governor who resigned in disgrace."
It'll be possible only if
hard evidence is found.
"There has to be evidence
of a quid pro quo. And there doesn't seem to be evidence of that, at least not
yet," Meager says.
Virginia's lax ethics laws
are in the Governor's favor.
"The disclosure laws in
Virginia are very loose. The whole idea is that any gift can be given as long
as you disclose, but there's not a lot of enforcement."
